Post Graduation Work Permit

When a foreign student completes his or her graduation degree in Canada, he or she is eligible to apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). It is basically an open work permit (temporary employment). With it, you can work for any company in the country.

You are not automatically qualified for a PGWP just because you graduate from a DLI. You must meet other perquisites.

A popular immigration pathway – open work permit

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a popular immigration program in Canada that allows international students in Canada to gain valuable work experience. Possessing Canadian job experience can pave the way to many immigration options, including citizenship in Canada. It’s valid for eight months to three years.

Validity of your PGWP

The length of your study program will determine the validity period of your PGWP.

• Less than 240 days study program – not eligible
• Less than 730 days but program valid for 240 days – open WP is valid as long as your study program is valid
• 730 days or more – an open WP is valid for 1095 days.

Is the passport about to expire?

Validating your passport is crucial. The passport is the prime ID that supports your entire stay in Canada while applying for a PGWP, and work. If your passport is set to expire before your trip, we’ll let you know if you need to renew it. In most cases, we’ll direct you to submit an application for a PGWP extension. If it occurs, a written application is required.

Is there a timeframe for obtaining a PGWP?

The typical processing time for a PGWP is between 80 and 180 days. If you apply for a PGWP before your student permit expires, you will be able to work in Canada while you wait for it. It is now possible to apply for a PGWP after leaving Canada and finishing your education elsewhere.

It is possible that the visa office handling your PGWP application from outside Canada will ask for further documentation. The Post-Graduation Work Permit program does not have any sub-categories, but students from a valuable program may be eligible for faster processing times and other benefits.

Basic eligibility

• A PGWP can be obtained by foreign nationals
• Have completed an 8-month full-time study program in Canada
• Are at least 18 years old
• The course must have been taken at a DLI
• An international student has 180 days to apply for their WP
• A valid status is required at the time of application (from within Canada)
• Foreigners are welcome to submit applications for PGWPs.
• Meet other basic requirements determined by IRCC & ESDC

The PGWP is a streamlined way for international students to become permanent residents of Canada after completing their studies there. The Canadian Express Entry immigration system favors applicants who have successfully transitioned their degree into full-time employment in Canada. You will get a CRS score.
