Eligibility & Sub-Categories

Foreign workers to apply & get an open-work permit in Canada under the IMP must meet the following requirements –

  • Apply online from outside Canada, or in Canada but not staying in Quebec
  • They must have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer (A letter of invitation).
  • Their job must fall under one of the IMP’s sub-categories.
  • They must have the necessary skills, education, and experience to perform the job.
  • Have a health insurance
  • No criminal charges pending
  • Respect Canadian culture and laws
  • Your CLP or spouse may be eligible if you’re eligible too.
  • And meet other specific requirements.
  • Intra-Company Transfers: This sub-category is for employees of a foreign company who are being transferred to a Canadian subsidiary, affiliate, or parent company.
  • International Agreements: This sub-category is for foreign workers who are being hired under an international agreement, such as NAFTA.
  • Significant Benefit: This sub-category is for foreign workers who will bring a significant economic, social, or cultural benefit to Canada.
  • Bridging Open Work Permit: This sub-category is for individuals who are in the process of applying for permanent residency in Canada and have a valid work permit.

Intra-Company Transfers, International Agreements, and Significant Benefit work permits can be valid for up to four years, while Bridging Open Work Permits are typically valid for one year.

IMP over-view & hiring process

Employers must advertise positions on the Canadian government’s Employer Portal, and create a profile and login ID. The company should identify its size, organizational makeup, and principal activities. The particulars of the job offer being made must also be specified.
