Parent/ Grandparent Sponsorship

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for immigration to Canada operates according to an Expression of Interest / Invitation to Apply system.

Eligible Sponsor

You are eligible to sponsor your own parents and grandparents if:

  • The sponsor must be at least 18 years old and a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident or a Registered Indian.
  • The sponsor should meet sponsorship Canada income requirements: must be above the minimum threshold for this program (for married or common-law relationships, both spouses income is included) for last three years.
  • The sponsor must sign an undertaking which would state that they would provide for the basic requirements for 20 years from the day their parents or grandparents becomes a permanent resident.
  • The sponsor must NOT be on social assistance for a reason other than a disability or in default of a previous sponsorship undertakings if any or bankrupt or in process of a bankruptcy proceeding.
  • In case of intention to live is in Quebec, certain additional requirements must be met.

Expression of Interest

This year the Government of Canada accepted 27,000 Interest to Sponsor Forms during a brief submission period on January 28, 2019.

The Expression of Interest Form itself is not an application form; rather, it allows Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to gather the contact details and personal information of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who wish to sponsor a family member.

In the 2019 application cycle, individuals looking to sponsor their parent(s) or grandparent(s) were required to provide the following information on the Interest to Sponsor form:

  • family name(s) and given name(s)
  • date of birth
  • country or territory of birth
  • primary residential address in Canada
  • email address for communication with IRCC
  • number of family members
  • total number of persons the individual wishes to sponsor, including dependents (spouse/partner and children)
  • names of the parents and grandparents the individual want to sponsor and their date of birth
  • an electronic signature; and
  • proof of status in Canada

Post submitting an Interest to Sponsor Form

Under Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) expression of interest system, potential sponsors must first complete and submit the ‘Interest to Sponsor’ form online once it becomes available.

Potential sponsors who receive an invitation to submit a sponsorship application will have to submit a complete application package, including supporting documents and fees on or before the specified deadline.

Given this short application window, it is highly recommended that all interested sponsors prepare the supporting documents in advance of receiving an invitation to apply. Supporting documents include income tax records, documents relating to civil status, and other documents.

After receiving an invitation to apply

If an interested sponsor receives an invitation to apply to the PGP, they must complete a number of forms.

It is crucial that applicants complete all forms honestly and meticulously. Any errors could lead to an application being refused.

A complete application package includes completed forms and all supporting documents.

During application processing, IRCC will ask persons being sponsored to provide information, such as their biometrics fee, medical exams, police certificates or any other documents that are required.

The processing time for complete PGP applications that are submitted on time is set to 20 to 24 months.
